William Shakespeare: 20 Enduring Quotes

William Shakespeare (1564-1616) was an English poet and playwright and is widely regarded as the greatest writer in the English language. He wrote 38 plays and 154 sonnets.

Where does one begin creating a list of memorable lines from his immortalized plays? Rather than choosing some of the famous longer passages, I have selected some shorter lines which provide some perspective on human nature:

-Our doubts are traitors, and make us lose the good we oft might win, by fearing to attempt.

-A fool thinks himself to be wise, but a wise man knows himself to be a fool.

-This above all: to thine own self be true,
And it must follow, as the night the day,
Thou canst not then be false to any man.

-How far that little candle throws his beams. So shines a good deed in a weary world.

-It is not in the stars to hold our destiny but in ourselves.

-Wisely and slow, they stumble who run fast.

-Dost thou think, because thou art virtuous, there shall be no more cakes and ale?

-If all the year were playing holidays, to sport would be as tedious as to work.

-Be great in act, as you have been in thought.

-In time we hate that which we often fear.

Selected by quoteflections.

-Everything that grows holds in perfection but a moment.

-Love comforteth like sunshine after rain.

-What is past is prologue.

-In thy face I see the map of honor, truth, and loyalty.

-Let me be that I am and seek not to alter me.

-Striving to be better, oft we mar what's well.

-Love comforteth like sunshine after rain.

-Expectation is the root of all heartache.

-Love all. Trust a few. Do wrong to none.

-Of all knowledge the wise and good seek most to know themselves.

#187 Reverse the Degradation

Willful waste brings woeful want. ~Thomas Fuller

Human society sustains itself by transforming nature into garbage. ~ Mason Cooley

With each passing day, it is becoming increasingly clear that the strategy of environmental exploitation that characterized the 20th century is reaching the end of its natural life. We are in the early stages of a transition from an attitude that, in Herman Daly's felicitous phrase, 'treats the Earth like a business in liquidation' to one that is committed to preserving the planet's 'natural capital.' The principle underlying this shift is really quite simple: if we want a high quality of life for ourselves and future generations - a high quality of life in all its senses - we cannot continue to degrade the quality of the natural systems of which we are a part. ~ Carl Frankel

#184 Turn on the Light

It doesn't matter how long we may have been stuck in a sense of our limitations. If we go into a darkened room and turn on the light, it doesn't matter if the room has been dark for a day, a week, or ten thousand years -- we turn on the light and it is illuminated. Once we control our capacity for love and happiness, the light has been turned on. ~ Sharon Salzberg

Depending upon the circumstances, change can be met with excitement, reluctance, or even fear. Here is a select list of quotations which provides some helpful guidance.

- Our days are a kaleidoscope. Every instant a change takes place...New harmonies, new contrasts, new combinations of every sort...The most familiar people stand each moment in some new relation to each other, to their work, to surrounding objects. ~ Henry Ward Beecher

#181 Three Passions

Three passions, simple but overwhelmingly strong, have governed my life: the longing for love, the search for knowledge, and unbearable pity for the suffering of mankind. These passions, like great winds, have blown me hither and thither, in a wayward course, over a great ocean of anguish, reaching to the very verge of despair.

I have sought love, first, because it brings ecstasy - ecstasy so great that I would often have sacrificed all the rest of life for a few hours of this joy. I have sought it, next, because it relieves loneliness--that terrible loneliness in which one shivering consciousness looks over the rim of the world into the cold unfathomable lifeless abyss. I have sought it finally, because in the union of love I have seen, in a mystic miniature, the prefiguring vision of the heaven that saints and poets have imagined. This is what I sought, and though it might seem too good for human life, this is what--at last--I have found.

With equal passion I have sought knowledge. I have wished to understand the hearts of men. I have wished to know why the stars shine. And I have tried to apprehend the Pythagorean power by which number holds sway above the flux. A little of this, but not much, I have achieved.

Love and knowledge, so far as they were possible, led upward toward the heavens. But always pity brought me back to earth. Echoes of cries of pain reverberate in my heart. Children in famine, victims tortured by oppressors, helpless old people a burden to their sons, and the whole world of loneliness, poverty, and pain make a mockery of what human life should be. I long to alleviate this evil, but I cannot, and I too suffer.

This has been my life. I have found it worth living, and would gladly live it again if the chance were offered me. ~ Bertrand Russell

Great Author Series: Master of the Haiku

Matsuo Basho (1644-1694) was a Japanese poet best known for his poems in haiku style. He renounced the social, urban life of the literary circles to wander the countryside seeking nurture. His poems encapsulate the essence of a scene in a few lines of simple elements.

Here is a select list of his enduring poetry which captures the intensity of life in stirring simplicity. (The required 5/7/5 syllabic lines are often not apparent with the translation.)

With dewdrops dripping,
I wish somehow I could wash
this perishing world

moonless night...
a powerful wind embraces
the ancient cedars

Temple bells die out.
The fragrant blossoms remain.
A perfect evening!

Culture's beginnings:
rice-planting songs from the heart
of the country

A mountain pheasant cry
fills me with fond longing for
father and mother

Selected by quoteflections.

Sick on my journey,
only my dreams will wander
these desolate moors

Spring air --
Woven moon
And plum scent.

The voices of plovers
Invite me to stare into the darkness
Of the Starlit Promontory

#179 Be in Charge of your Attitude

The longer I live, the more I realize the impact of attitude on life.

Attitude, to me, is more important than facts. It is more important than the past, than education, than money, than circumstances, than failures, than successes, than what other people think or say or do. It is more important than appearance, giftedness or skill. It will make or break a company... a church... a home.

The remarkable thing is we have a choice every day regarding the attitude we will embrace for that day. We cannot change our past... we cannot change the fact that people will act in a certain way. We cannot change the inevitable. The only thing we can do is play on the one string we have, and that is our attitude... I am convinced that life is 10% what happens to me and 90% how I react to it.

And so it is with you... we are in charge of our attitudes. ~ Charles Swindoll

#178 The Seeds of Today

Now is the accepted time, not tomorrow, not some more convenient season. It is today that our best work can be done and not some future day or future year. - Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self seeking. It is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails. ~ I Corinthians 13:4-8

- We are not the same persons this year as last; nor are those we love. It is a happy chance if we, changing, continue to love a changed person. ~W. Somerset Maugham

-To love at all is to be vulnerable. Love anything and your heart will be wrung and possibly broken. If you want to make sure of keeping it intact you must give it to no one, not even an animal. Wrap it carefully round with hobbies and little luxuries; avoid all entanglements. Lock it up safe in the casket or coffin of your selfishness. But in that casket, safe, dark, motionless, airless, it will change. It will not be broken; it will become unbreakable, impenetrable, irredeemable. To love is to be vulnerable. ~ C. S. Lewis

#177 A Web of Connectness

The important element is the way in which all things are connected. Every thought and action sends shivers of energy into the world around us, which affects all creation. Perceiving the world as a web of connectedness helps us to overcome the feelings of separation that hold us back and cloud our vision. This connection with all life increases our sense of responsibility for every move, every attitude, allowing us to see clearly that each soul does indeed make a difference to the whole. ~ Emma Restall Orr

Questions asked at 365 Quote Quest:

- How separate do you see yourself from nature, from the world?
- How can a feeling of separation from the world cloud one's vision?
- How can you nurture more of a sense of connection with this world?

#172 Be Daring, Be Different

My kids are starting to notice I'm a little different from the other dads. "Why don't you have a straight job like everyone else?" they asked me the other day.

I told them this story:
In the forest, there was a crooked tree and a straight tree. Every day, the straight tree would say to the crooked tree, "Look at me...I'm tall, and I'm straight, and I'm handsome. Look at you...you're all crooked and bent over. No one wants to look at you." And they grew up in that forest together. And then one day the loggers came, and they saw the crooked tree and the straight tree, and they said, "Just cut the straight trees and leave the rest." So the loggers turned all the straight trees into lumber and toothpicks and paper. And the crooked tree is still there, growing stronger and stranger every day. ~Tom Waits
